I took a job teaching swim lessons when I was 15.  I was working with one little girl, trying to encourage her to push off the wall to swim just a few feet into my arms.  As soon as she pushed off, I broke my promise and began taking steps backwards while  cheering her on.  She quickly picked up on my actions and started crying for me to stop.  I took her into my arms and wiped away her tears as I was scolded for breaking my promise and moving  I tried interrupting, "Look...look how far...".  She turned her head and before I could finish my sentence, she screamed across the pool, "MOM!!  Did you see that?!?!"  It was like flipping a switch.  She pushed off my knees and swam back as if she had been doing it for weeks.  It is for that light bulb, that excitement, the tears turned into success.  That is why I do what I do.

  • I do what I do because I want to help my students achieve everything they want in life. I want to inspire kids like the teachers I had inspired me to set my goals and then go beyond them. My sister who is younger, happens to be a huge reason for me to be the best teacher I can be. She, like like many students was bullied almost her entire life. But it took one teacher to care about her enough to make her feel special and a part of a learning community. Now she is a highly successful student at a Environmental Science college and reminds me every day that just one teacher can make a huge impact.

  • I do what I do because children with special needs have a special place in my heart. I want to be a special education teacher and be able to help children reach their personal goals, and help them set goals.  My youngest sister is 17 and she has Cerebral Palsy, she is my inspiration and the reason why I want to become a teacher!!!! Six months ago my daughter Isabella was born, and I also have another reason to become a teacher. People tell me I am going to be a great teacher, and I want to show the people who believe in me that I can and will be a great teacher!!!

  • Over the years, the one constant in my life has been what I want to do. Something that has been changing over the years is why I want to do it. As you probably have already guessed, what I want to do is be a teacher. Ever since I was little, I wanted to be a teacher because I liked to help people. For the longest time, helping people and my love for working with kids has been my inspiration. More recently, my niece was born. She has had a huge impact on my life and has put many things in perspective for me. After the recent events at Sandy Hook, I have realized even more so why I want to teach. All children deserve to have a bright future and a fair chance at one. I wanted to express this using WDYDWYD because I was able to use text and a picture to emphasise this feeling. I have never created anything like this before so I wanted to try something out of my norm. I really enjoyed using this. There is also a spot to put thoughts down, kind of like a facebook status. The only difference is, there is a limit to how many characters you can use. I had to type and retype my response in order to say what I wanted to say. My favorite part of this was being able to say so much in just a picture and some text.

I do what I do because there is nothing like the look on a child's face when they finally "get" something that they have been struggling with.  It is hard not to feel frustrated when you are working with a student on the same topic over and over and it still does not seem to be making sense to them. However, the look they get on their face once you have figured out a strategy that works for them is worth any frustration you may face. I honestly do not think the amazing feeling I experience everytime I help a child reach their goal will ever fade.

I chose to include pictures that represent both my teaching in a regular classroom, and also my teaching on the volleyball court, as a high school coach. I feel that starting out as a coach prior to going to school to be a teacher really helped me to adjust to the "teacher role" quite easily. I also think that being a coach allows me to get to know the students on a more personal level than it does when I only interact with them in a classroom setting.

I do what I do because there are so many negative things going on in this world, and I need something positive to work for. I need to know that I am doing my best to make this world a better place, even if it is something small. Teaching is just a million small moments strung together...into, I hope, something big. I do it for myself, to make my own life meaningul, and for the people I love. I hope to inspire them to make their own lives meaningful, too.
