- META is an eclectic gathering of social workers, writers, photographers, art critics, gallery owners, chefs, philanthropists, singer-songwriters, classical musicians, mathematicians, ceramic artists, filmmakers, animal trainers, illustrators, hoteliers, actors, entrepreneurs, architects, journalists, wine merchants, editors, physicists, poets, medical doctors, curators, sculptors, and rock musicians, who gather for a week every two or three years on the old campus of Black Mountain College - the birthplace of the American avant-garde. Creative people as diverse as Willem and Elaine de Kooning, Agnes de Mille, Anäis Nin, John Dewey, and Albert Einstein were students, teachers and participants here in the past. Buckminster Fuller's first geodesic dome was attempted here and the first multi-media art "Happening" took place here.
