I am an international student from Korea in UCLA. My major is Applied Mathematic. Since I have lived here only for 2 years, English is still my biggest burden in American life. It could be one of reasons that I choose math as my major since I don’t need to speak and use English that much. Actually, I majored in Engineering in Korea but I realized it is too hard for me. If I have had the same mind that I have now, I would not change my major and will dig up in studying Engineering. What do I have in my mind now? Compared to the earlier myself in 2 years ago, I have been responsible in what I have chosen and the reasons of the choices are reasonable and logical to me, which means I am the one who choose the direction of my life following my own standards.
There are two main reasons that I choose math as my major. First reason for studying math is just I like it. I like logic in math. Though my roommate, who wants to go to law school, says I won’t earn a lot of money by majoring math, I won’t change my major. What else reasons are need for doing what I like? Doing what I like passionately is the best thing that I can do for my life.
Second, I want to be a critical thinker. I believe that studying math can improve the spectrum my thinking because it has hard logical steps in learning math. I also think it is obtained when I practice a lot. This is why I have decided to go to library everyday. It will need the patience and persistence to go up the level that I pursuit by doing so. They are quite important values for me as well as having the knowledge in mathematics. This can be seen a dull and inefficient way of learning. Some people can study efficiently, saving times and taking less effort but from my experience, it is the best way for me. Those can help me not only in learning something but in living in real life.
