We watched so many different live performances in class: singing, acting, piano, percussion instruments, and dancing. Every time guest performers come in and share their talents with us, I am fascinated by their performances and I want to learn how to sing, dance, or act like them. The course introduced me to new forms of art that I never even thought of. For example, I knew what tap dace is but I never imagined that I can learn it if I wanted to. After watching many dancers perform on stage, I wanted to learn a certain type of dance. I finally wanted to find a hobby other than watching a television or going on facebook. Starting spring quarter, I am going to take Jazz dance lessons. I am really excited and worried at the same time because dancing is a brand new subject to me. I hope that by some miracle, I have a hidden talent in dancing :)

Anyone else starting something new after watching the live performances in class?

  • Most of the live events that I attended were of categories that I was not familiar with. I have never been to a jazz show, or a personal reading, or a classical music event. After going to these shows, I realized I have been missing out on wonderful art. The events I attended were not all the greatest events. Some were boring and some were exciting. But they were all worth the time. I am not quite at the point of exploring new art forms myself, but I am making small steps to see different kinds. I already got tickets for the next UCLA Live event happening in April. Attending all these live events encouraged me to go out and see more. I am not planning on taking classes for dance or instruments. But I am planning on paying a visit to the theater that I attended for my off-campus event. The musical I saw there was incredible and I want to watch more productions in that playhouse near the campus. Who knows? Maybe if I keep watching these events, I may be inspired to participate in such art form.
  • After watching the extra credit performances I am actually interested in Indian Dance. Does anyone share the same thought? There is just something about the music and they way they can really grove to the beat that makes you tap your feet when they dance and wish you can join in. I definitely am going to take indian dance lessons after finals if I can find a good place to learn.

I myself have never explored dance before so that's definitely a new art form to explore. Also just watching people play music on stage makes me want to play my guitar when I get home! It's a great class to kinda get in touch with your art roots (even if we only had brief encounters with art when we were young).
