What concerts and bands have you seen lately?

I was wondering what concerts and performing artist you have seen lately and what artist you recommend. Why did you enjoy their performance and what made it speacial?

I recently saw Switchfoot in concert and they were probably the best band I have ever seen live. Their energy and music speaks to me and I feel an emotional attachment to their music now.

  • I recently attended the Sundays Live at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. I watched the performance of the U.S. Army Chorus. It was directed by Dwayne S. Milburn. The performance was enjoyable and interesting. They had a humorous skit mixed in with their song. I would recommend this performance to other people.
  • I went to Getty Museum last weekend and did a lot of people watching. I'd consider that a "performing art." Although the people weren't purposely performing or anything like that, people's natural movements and behavior is sort of like a performance, right? I thought it was interesting how when people are at an art museum, they look at the photographs, paintings, and whatnot so seriously and stare at it and try to figure out the meaning of it. Yet, when we walk on the streets, we pass by so much art and don't analyze everything as we do at museums. Beautiful, artistic things don't only exist in museums. I'd actually rather spend a day finding art in the real world than going to a museum where the art is already set up for you. It's a shame that a lot of people don't appreciate art and beauty outside of a museum or gallery or exhibition, etc. like in every day life. The other day, I stared at a squirrel trying to drag a giant muffin into its burrow, and I thought it was really beautiful. Art!

    I'm sleepy.

  • The best concert I've ever been to was a small Robyn show.  She's a really good pop singer and her concert was super high energy and a ton of fun.  I didn't even know about her before the show, but after I got all her music and have become a huge fan. She's opening for Katy Perry's tour this year so if you get a chance you should definitely check it out.
  • i attended the 'Scharoun Ensemble Berlin.' the first piece performed was the clarinet quintet in major, K.581. i thought that the muisc piece played in major and quadruple rhythm was comfortable and peaceful to listen to me. i heard directly the sound of the basson as well. the sound was appealing and harmonizing throughout the entire performance.

i felt that this performance gave me an opportunity to learn to be an actibve listener and attend other musical performances.

  • For my extra credit event, I went to the Dawes Concert few weeks ago. I didn't know anything about the band or their songs before going to the concert, so I had no idea what to expect. The band consisted of two guitarists, one drummer, and one keyboard player. Although their songs were different from the ones I would normally listen to, I enjoyed the performance overall. I researched the band after the concert and found out that their genre of music is Americana/Soul. It was a new experience although the venue seemed out of place (Royce Hall). I would have enjoyed it even more if the concert took place outdoors :)
  • I saw Maroon 5, Bruno Mars, and One Republic a few months ago and they were amazing! Talk about a great live performance, they just had such amazing stage presence you could not help but watch every second.
  • I went to the Karsh Kale UCLA Live performance and I had an amazing spiritual experience, especially because of the vocalist (I forgot his name). His voice literally echoed throughout my body and the fact that he sang in a different language made the experience very ritualistic.
  • I went to the quarterfinals of ICCA's (International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella) this past weekend, and saw a professional a cappella group, named Simply Put, perform.  The harmonies and sound that the were able to produce with 5 singers and a beatboxer was absolutely amazing, and they performed a slower, jazzy version of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" that was extremely impressive.  They said that they were a fairly new group, so they were still in the process of settling down as a group, but another group that I saw last year at Bruin Harmony's LAAF (Los Angeles A Cappella Festival) was named Sonos, and they absolutely blew my mind; they are another, much more experienced professional a cappella group, and their rawness and sensitivity of their music has moved me to tears before.  I highly recommend looking up their album Sonosings, and specifically, their cover of Bon Iver's "Re: Stacks", if you are interested!
  • I went to the UCLA live called Scharoun Ensemble Berlin tonight. It was classical performance and they played popular classical songs Clarinet Quintet in A Major K.581 composed by Mozart and Octet in F Major D.803 composed by Franz Schubert. The first song was very softer, sweeter, and mellower and i loved sound of clarinet. The second song was much joyful and louder than first song. I recommend this performance because performers and program both were really great!

  • I actually went to the Kidd Pivot dance yesterday and I was blown away by the way the performers danced. The way they moved and danced to the music was amazing and I believe that some dancing that others see on TV like "America's Best Dance Crew" would be no match towards these different kinds of professional dancers. I originally was not planning to see this play and had picked some other UCLA live performance to go to but due to some lucky misfortune I was forced to attend Kidd Pivot's production and I was glad I did! It was completely different from some of the types you would see on television and it was pretty much different from what we saw in Professor Winter's class. I would say the dance and music is more modern but doesn't lose the crazy irregular beats that we have been introduced to in class and is much more complex than other hip hop dances! I would encourage everyone to try to see a live dance because it really changes your perception on dance!
