Classical music today

In the 1800s, musicians believed that the music that they created represented a universal truth that they did not know. By composing and playing music, they believed that they expressed this universal truth. In our society, this belief no longer has any relevance. Classical musicians of today tend to have a more scientific approach to music. They are much more concerned with playing pieces correctly; they are concerned with playing the "correct" version with the "correct" emotions and "correct" notes. The composers' original intentions are ultimately lost and the music created by these contemporary musicians is meaningless. Is this new and scientific approach to music still art?

  • I consider this new and scientific approach to music still art, but just a different kind. While modern musicians are concerned with playing pieces correctly with the "correct" emotions, their interpretation of the music, to adhere to THEIR version of "correct", is still unique to them and displays the qualities and characteristics of the musician. Similar to the musicians of the past, who believed that their music expressed a universal truth, the musicians of today attempt to replicate this universal truth as "correctly" as they can, which I believe is a form of art in itself.
