Cosplay

Once a year, there an expo called Anime Expo, where people dress up as characters from games, cartoon, etc, held at the Los Angeles Convention Center. This type of dressing up is called cosplay. It's pretty similar to Halloween except some people are on a different level when it comes to designing their costumes. If you happened to have been near the Convention Center last July, you probably have seen people with different colored wigs while carrying all sorts of weapon (which some probably made on their own). I find it fascinating how people can be so creative and the amount of effort they put in to creating the costume is truly amazing. What do you guys think of this? Would you consider this a performing art?

  • Yea, I agree with the 2 posts above me- I don't think it can be considered as "performing art."

I guess you can stretch it and say that the costumes and the props can be considered art but since they're not really performing anything, I wouldn't consider it as performing art.

    • Well I've actually been to Anime expo and they do have different types of performances such as Masquerade and all i know is that for the best cos-play performance wins $10,000. Thats a lot of money!
  • I don't think it can be considered a performing art since it isn't an art in the first place. People seem to cosplay as characters for fun or to show support. Although there may be creativity and resourcefulness involved, cosplaying is no more a performing art than dressing up in costume for Halloween.
  • Not sure if it can be considered as a performing art, just because it doesn't include any means of performance, maybe it can be like a "participating" art. I've been to one of those and there's definitely "art" everywhere with creative customs and what not, but coming from a family where my sister and I have concerts quite frequently, it can't be considered as a "performing" art.
