Do you consider fashion an art?

Do you consider fashion an art? Many designers seem to take themselves very seriously. One even said that a dress can evoke emotions and even cause tears. I think that's kind of ridiculous. It's just a dress. I don't think clothes should have any meanings attached to them. They should be functional and do what they were meant to do. In something as shallow as fashion, attaching some sort of concept, belief, or statement to a fancy shirt or a dress seems pretentious and self-important. Seriously, it's just a dress.

  • I think fashion can be an art form for some people.  Just like any other style of art, not every person will or does appreciate it.  Fashion for some people can influence their creative side just like for others, dancing can.  Art is subjective because it can be viewed differently by every person.

  • No offense, but it's not just "a dress," it's a statement, and expression and an identity just like any other art form.  These designers "take themselves seriously" because they are serious and impactful artist--more impact than most because what they do can be seen everyday,  in every persons closet! Fashion has just as much meaning as music or art. And fashion has something they don't like you said functionality. Yes, you can wear clothes but the clothes you wear says something about your personality and your life-choices, far more than anything else people see. When you wear that "fancy dress" you choose it for a reason, it made it feel confident, the vibrant color expressed your energy, that vintage design shows your love of antiques and old soul, those bold heels say you have class but know how to be different, that leather jacket exhibits your inner strength, that lace your warmth and gentility. Its the first thing people notice, the first impression and yes, if you see something, so design so beautiful or real, or important, it can make you cry, just like the climax of a huge orchestra pieces, or a impactful image. I think you see fashion as that target or amercrombie you shop at and yes those stores have no soul, no meaning to their pieces but functionality and money. but go to a real fashion show, look up some shoots and tell me the way those designers create their clothes isnt art.  Fashion is not shallow. Shopping is shallow. Stores are shallow. Just like those reprints you see at fastfood places or in motel rooms are shallow and empty. theyre not art. But real fashion, high fashion is art, is just like any van gogh or mozart. I think people who care about fashion have confident in who they are and what they believe in. If you don't care....
