Music taken out of context

Let's consider the concept of bricolage.

In what ways do certain cultures or people take music out of its original context or use it for different purposes than its composer's intent?

The first example that comes to mind (for me at least) is white people and rock n' roll, specifically how from the early 1950s until Elvis, it was a completely African American music genre, compared with the 1980s, where it became a virtually all-white phenomenon, though much different than its primary form.
