http://www.npr.org/2011/02/03/133437702/javier-bardem-on-a-biutiful-acting-career even just the first few minutes of this interview have great insights about the process an actor goes through to portray his character. he also discusses the relationship between actor and director (Inarritu). Incredible actor, director, and films!!!

  • This interview reminded me a lot of Heath Ledgers death.  While playing the Joker for The Dark Night, Ledger said that he was having trouble sleeping because of the “psychopathic, mass-murdering, schizophrenic clown with zero empathy" the Joker was.  He was so immersed into the role of the Joker that it eventually took his life from drug overdose.  It is almost scary to see how far actors must go in order to truly understand their character and create a true work of art.
  • i sometimes find it scary that a role (like for a movie) can change a person...i remember we were watching Malcom X, the one with Denzel Washington and he got so into his character, he ended up having to see a psychologist or something like that afterwards to break Malcom X's viewpoint on the caucasian society....and likewise for Bardem, he got so into his character, that he started to change as well....i dont kno if that shows a great actor, but i feel as if it's a loss of identity. and i kno that would confuse or maybe even scare me, especially since i'm not quite sure what my identity is....
    • I feel the same way. It's crazy how just acting like someone else can change you.
  • I thought it was really interesting how Bardem was saying you have to be at peace with yourself and understand yourself before you can portray somebody else. I never really thought before how much it can affect an actor to portray the character of someone else. It must be difficult to have to constantly deal with your own emotions and character traits as well as those you are responsible for accurately portraying. It probably feels like you have to be two people at once...
