Article: New app to bring U.S. art to wider audience

"A new iPhone app is opening up Kentucky's art scene to the public by bringing thousands of works of art in small American communities to a wider audience."

This reminds me of the talk in lecture about a film director using only his IPhone 4 to shoot an entire movie. I think this type of free applications on smartphones will greatly help independent artists and public arts in spreading their work, just like how YouTube has done. It also opens up new possibilities for art educations.

What do you think about today's new mobile technologies as distribution mediums of art? Also, do you think the technologies themselves are pieces of art as well?

  • I think the technologies should be perceived as new tools or mediums that we can utilize in producing/publishing art. I don't think it necessarily limits how we experience art because it doesn't hinder us from actually going to museums or theatres to experience the intimacy of a "real" art, whatever a real art is for each of us. Technology is something that greatly widens our views and opportunities, and we should be able to manage it properly so that it is useful to us.
  • yes, the new tech really helped with producing more creative things. especially for me, I don't know how to draw a fabulous pictures but those high tech app really helped me to perform the type of art I want to express. But I still don't think technology it self is art.
  • i should download this +_+
  • I'm a big fan of new mobile technologies as distribution mediums of art. I find myself watching videos on youtube constantly, whether its sports, music videos or other forms of art. Using youtube has exposed me to things that I would not have seen without youtube.
  • I think that it’s great that new technology is making art more accessible to the masses. I hope that it will spark more discussion about what is considered art and why other things aren’t considered art.

  • I think that it is both a good thing and a bad thing.  some cons include that the influence and accessibility of media is so great today that many times people get lost in a sea of technology.  This makes it hard to weed out art from uninspired, mass produced work.  Also it allows untrained persons to create something they believe to be as art, when really it is just unimportant stuff.  However, I also believe that the great accessibility to these technologies allows more people to get involved as artists and therefore yields much more highly important art that could reach many people.  I do believe that certain technologies are art.
  • I believe that mobile technologies are a great way to capture art and display it to the public.  I always find myself taking pictures with my phone of sayings written on Bruin Walk in chalk and or various objects that just capture my eye.  Without these technologies, I wouldn't be able to capture these random works of art.  I do not feel that the technologies are pieces of art themselves.  A phone is a phone, there is no question about it, but the functions a phone can perform (particularly the IPhone) may be considered art.
    • So true! After I played around with an IPhone a little bit, I felt the phone itself is okay, but the rich functionalities that come with the phone can definitely be considered art. One app that stands out is the Doodle app, which allows me to create little sketches whenever I feel like it.
  • It at least brings wider recognition to the artists' art which is pretty cool. This is a glimpse of the future for art being available for everyone to see.
  • I agree that new technology helps with art distribution but I feel this can cause more harm than good.  For example, technology has provided easy access to music but the high level of convenience has been exploited to a high degree.  Artists will not be able to receive the credit they deserve if technology continues to improve.
