I personally think my grade represents me to some extent. As a student, studying is the most important task, so a student's grade reflect his/her intelligence and effort. Some people would argue that they don't have a good grade because they don't care enough to work hard - well, then the grade reflect their attitude. I work hard to get a good grade not only to impress my parents and friends, which I believe is also important, but to satisfy myself. I don't want to have regret for any class I took.
Most professors and or TAs always say that they want you to learn and that the grade itself shouldn't matter that much, but that isn't the case. Every grade I receive plays some role in determining where I will go to grad school and what I can do in the future. I wish it wasn't the case that I was solely focused on the letter grade, but I strive to get an A in this class along with all my other classes so that I can have options for my future endeavors.
Getting an A makes me feel like I have learned all the materials taught in the class. Although I don't believe the GPA equals ability, both company recruiters and grad schools look at it, therefore I need work hard to get a good grade.
Academic excellence is kind of what I aim to take pride in. I remember suffering from senioritis (a disease that many 2nd semester high school seniors get; identified with severe laziness) and deeply being disappointed at myself :(
It's like a personal expectancy as well as a preparation for better future.
It's pretty simple. If I get an A, I'm happy, then my parents are happy. If they are happy, naturally less stress and more allowance for me. But if get a C or something, nobody is happy. Then why wouldn't I want to strive for an A? :)
Why would you want to work hard and not get an A? I work hard in all my classes regardless if I think I can get an A or not because if I don't work hard I feel like I'm cheating myself.
