Wrinkles of the City project

Recently, a French artist called JR has been going around Los Angeles and painting "wrinkles" on buildings.

This is his website:

I saw an article written on him in the NY Times and thought what he does is really interesting. His works are usually found in slums and ghettos around the world. Here's the article of where he's painted in LA so far:

  • wow this guy is talented.....
  • It's interesting that he primarily puts them in slums and ghettos.  The fact that they are wrinkles seems to represents old age and ugliness (like the slums/ghettos) but the fact that they look so beautiful and artistic on the walls shows that if you take another look, these slums and ghettos are really filled with an underlying beauty.
  • I think it's meaningful especially because it brings the understandings of life which wrinkles signify into the wrinkle-less walls of our daily lives.
  • This is really good, I love it!I can feel the meaning of the art.
  • The art is very life like and I enjoy looking at the detail in his work. very cool!
  • I think that his work livens some of the not so nice parts of cities which is really good. They look really realistic!
  • Yeah I heard about this guy too.  I think his mission is really cool and hope he uses the TED award to affect people in a good way.  I am partly surprised that he won this award, seeing as how he is a graffiti artist, but I think it is important to acknowledge the fact that even though it is sometimes illegal, graffiti is a valid art form that could change people's perspectives.
    • I think he actually gets permission for a majority of his projects. he might have used part of the award money to be able to do so. I was surprised an artist won the TED award, I thought they give awards more to organizations.
  • wow his works look so interesting and impressive. The buildings have emotions and lives now. Wish I could see him painting the buildings in person! I wonder where did he get the inspiration.
  • Very cool. I would love to go see one of his works in person. I think arts like these would make people appreciate and enjoy LA more. It would let people temporarily escape from the pressures in real life and explore the art itself.
