Do you guys feel ready for the midterm?

Honestly, I feel that there's been so many topics going on in class that it's hard to remember everything. It feels as if the class goes in a non-linear fashion, starting from China to classical music to shakespeare and what not.

How are you guys going to prepare for the midterm, and what do you think are the most crucial topics to memorize?

  • Since there's no textbook or anything, I was feeling the same way. There's no reference to refer to. I really don't know how to prepare for the class. But after taking the test, i think simply going to the class is just enough to prepare for the exam. Or, I also studied with a few of my friends the night before, that helped me a lot.
  • It's good to know that everyone did so well on the midterm, but how is he going to distribute grades if almost 400 students got an A or higher? Do they all get As? Overall, I thought that the test was fair but it's true that you really have to pay attention during class to listen to the small details, which is what often threw me off guard. Also, one thing is for sure, if you don't attend lecture, then you won't get all the questions! Like the one about the guy who messed up his lines during the Romeo and Juliet skits, if you weren't in class that day you would not get it correct.
  • Yeah, I feel like the midterm went pretty all right for the most part!

Some of the questions were actually a lot easier, almost obvious answers.

But most of it felt like either you knew it or you don't, which was kind of a... if you happened to be paying attention at that very moment kind of question.

That seemed somewhat "unfair", but I guess it's what separates the A students from the B.

  • I don't know if I want to believe the fact that we need to know just connections between some of the topics because frankly, they don't really all connect. I think we should know the pictures and music from the first couple of weeks, and then there are just a bunch of different philosophers and what not that might be important. It all seems really scattered and he probably will throw in a random question about like what his niece's name is or something.
  • I completely agree with you. The professor is continuously changing the subject in his lectures and he has so many slides I start to get lost and confused. I hope that the review session will help us have a clear image of what is going to be on the midterm. I think I’m going to memorize all the songs we’ve listened to and go over all the lecture notes as much as I can!

  • Honestly, I have no idea what I'm supposed to write down during lecture, especially when the guest speakers talk on Wednesdays. Every now and then he mentions certain facts that are going to be on the midterm, which I think has happened 2 or 3 times. Hopefully the review will be helpful.
  • I also feel the same way. It's annoying that we have jumped around so many different topics thus far in the quarter. I am unclear on the format of the midterm. Does anyone know what to expect format wise? I plan on preparing for the midterm by studying my notes, different guest speakers, and images posted on the website. Good luck to everyone!!
  • I feel like it is really important to attend the review sessions that Professor Winter is giving Monday night. I also agree that there is a lot of info and it kind of jumbled together, but I feel that if you know the main ideas to each topic that went with each class, Winters will outline what is most important. I am personally just going to study the notes he posted for week 3 and then just the note I took on the topics in class. Looking over the end of the syllabus might be a smart idea as well. Good luck to everyone.
