I really enjoyed this class very much for several reasons. I liked how it was both educational and fun. Winter was right for the most part when he mentioned that we baby boomers are not as appreciative or knowledgeable about the different types of art forms that have been around for generations. I liked how we could volunteer to be involved in learning about a new art form first hand without being embarrassed by yourself. I feel like topping it off with group performances was a perfect ending because it not only showcases the talent of the class, but also can reflect on what students got out of the class.

What I'm trying to say is that I would really enjoy another class like this if there is one offered. I wish I could take this class again because the performances and people will be new for every quarter it is offered. Does anyone know of a class that was this fun to take?

  • This class is definitely one of a kind in terms of the material it covers and the speakers it brings in, but I've heard of some other pretty engaging classes here. For example, there is one class where you design a Disney theme park concept from start to finish over the course of two quarters and get to hear from "Imagineers" who have actually worked on rides. There are some interactive unique classes out there, you just have to go out of your way to find them.
  • This class is unique, I have never taken a class like this before. Each week we were introduced so many aspects of art, and they are simply amazing. I also enjoyed the professors way of teaching, awesome!!!
  • AA10 is definitely one of the best classes out there, as far as GEs go. It's pretty hard to find a GE class that is actually entertaining, and AA fulfills that requirement. I think it really helped to have in class speakers and performers so the two hours didn't feel too arduous. There were some times when it all just got to be a bit too much though, such as the last few weeks of performances.
  • I think that this class is one of a kind. Of course there are other hands on classes at UCLA were you venture outside of the classroom to learn the subject, but none that I know of where the outside expertise comes to your class while you relax and take notes. I know this class seems really authentic because of the live performances and active learning that you can't get from a textbook. (If you are really adventurous you can take earth and space science GEs that have field trips involved to study geology, paleobiology etc. The only other class I have had that satisfies the need for hands on active learning like this has been ASTRO 180, for which lab sessions often go past midnight taking pictures through a telescope on top of M.S. Building. That to me is the coolest most satisfying class I have taken, but its not at all a GE)
  • This class is by far one of the most enjoyable and entertaining UCLA has to offer. Not only is it easy to learn the material and do well, it's easy to appreciate where Winters comes from and what type of guy he really is. He always wants his students to be engaged in class and he really wants us to learn and take the knowledge from this class and apply it to the future. With that being said, it seemed really laid back but also very interesting as most of us were able to look deeper into ourselves and one another to gain information about life.
  • I've never had a class like this! It has been one of the most interesting and intriguing things I've experienced. I love the amount of student involvement there is in the class. It definitely keeps the class new and exciting, never a dull moment. Professor Winter is like no other teacher. Although at times it seems like he doesn't care about student wellbeing, he really does try hard to have us enjoy the class and not waste our time.
  • I agree! I loved the course. I genuinely enjoyed lectures and Professor Winters is a true gem. I wish I could take this class again too! But unfortunately, I don't know of a similar class at UCLA.
  • Yes, I totally agree with you. This class is so interesting and I'm amazed by all those different art forms we're introduced to each week. I'd also like to take this class over, simply to see new performances and learn yet another art form.
