Kidd Pivot Performance

For those of you who went to the Kidd Pivot performance, what did you guys think of it?

I really liked the abstractness and the metaphorical implications behind each moves, despite me not getting the meaning (if there was some type of meaning).

I had a completely different idea of what contemporary dancing was, and this kind of brought new forms into my head. Was I the only one that thought the performance was slightly ... freaky?

  • I do not enjoy the show. I felt that was just annoying and I did not understand a thing from it. Sure the dancers were great amazing, and they showed the audiences their excellence. But I just could not understand the abstraction.
  • I too didn't really get most of the meaning behind most of the dances.  But nonetheless, I greatly enjoyed the performance. The dancers themselves are really talented, and I thought it was interesting how the director/choreographer used their motions and actions to convey the message, whether that message is social commentary or some universal truth.
  • I thought it was a pretty cool performance. I was sitting in the second row so I think I might have enjoyed it more than people in the back since its probably easier to see facial expression and dancing details from close up. The repetition got a bit annoying though. Repeating something once or showing it in reverse order gets its point across, but three or four times going through the same sequence was putting me to sleep. The music, strobe lights, and tortuous body positions were really freaky. There was plenty of death an I'm pretty sure at least one of the sequences was a representation of sex through dance. As far as the dancing style, it was so athletically demanding that it was crazy awesome. How do they propel themselves along the floor and pretend as though they were being dragged? It definitely entertained me although I am not sure what it meant.
  • While the dance was excellent, I often got lost in the repetition of acts and sayings. The dance also reminds me of popping, I'm not sure why. The music score was simply strange. In the end, I got completely lost and now I cannot quite remember what happened during the performance besides people falling on the ground.
  • I thought it was so weird! When the dancers first came out in their huge jackets and started moving back and forth I had no idea what to expect for the rest of the performance. I would agree that it was interesting but I didn't really enjoy it. I prefer more lyrical dances that are bright and positive. The repetitiveness of this performance was too boring.
  • I enjoyed it for the most part, but I have to agree that it was hard to find the "meaning" behind what they were doing. I got the obvious references to death and rebirth, and the repetition of various segments over and over seemed to suggest that we are stuck in a cycle that can't be broken. However, if there was an overall "story", I did not get it. What was the point of the jacket? Was it to show that if you aren't part of a group/society then you might as well be dead? A lot of the segments seemed to suggest an attitude of the dangers of conforming (the part where the men ran about the stage copying one another comes to mind). I'm just not sure what the overall message to the audience was supposed to be.
  • We are unable to escape life or death; we cannot stop the cycle of life and death. For some reason, the word that kept popping in my head throughout the performance is "samsara," a Buddhist term. It came up on my mythology lecture, so it freshly popped into my mind during the performance multiple times. While watching, I sensed some desperation, caused by the thought of bring stuck in time, in a cycle.

I too thought the performance was freaky. I got goosebumps. More than once I thought of The Grudge or The Ring... ugh, definitely freaky. Nevertheless, I liked the performance very much.

  • The dancers were really, really good. I feel like their style couldn't be simply categorized as "hip hop" or "ballet" or some other dance form, but it was obvious that the dancers were extremely skilled. I wasn't sure what to expect for contemporary dance, but the stage effects and rhythmic music were often quite unsettling. It was hard to understand what was happening at times, especially since my seat was too far in the back to see clearly, but overall I enjoyed the performance.
