I am a mediator, I help guide people who are having conflicts to a solution that they are happy with, and I do this because it is a way I can make a difference in a stranger’s life. The satisfaction I get from saving a friendship or just helping someone else out is to me the most genuine type. Seeing other people happy and knowing I played a part in their happiness is where I believe true self satisfaction comes from. In high school I spent a lot of my time dedicated to some form of helping others whether it was Peer College Counseling, Peer Mediation, or tutoring. All of these programs gave me a different method of making a difference in someone else’s life, and watching these once upon a time strangers excel gave me the same gratification if not more as if I were the one excelling.I enjoy helping others because it gives me a sense of purpose and direction. It is almost as if helping others is my call of duty and when you really think about it everyone’s purpose is helping others, it is just that everyone does it in a different way. One reason that people help others is because it guarantees some satisfaction and it keeps one from being alone. Since I was a child, my family has been everything to me; I am the youngest of my cousins and they are like additional older brothers and sisters. As a child I always heard screaming and fighting, and I always feared that one time one of these fights would explode and my family would fall apart. This same fear soon began to apply to the friends that I started to make in school. I hated fighting with people and I dreaded loosing friends. I guess you could say I was scared of being alone, so I always made a lot of friends so that I never had to be. In high school I realized that most people were like me, and I got involved with Peer Mediation which gave me the tool to saving friendships, so that no one would have to be alone.
