Matt GiovinazzoArts & Arch 10, Discussion 1IBruinID#: 903 757 627I’m MeThe question “who are you?” is perhaps the toughest question for every new college student. I know it is for me at least. Every incoming freshman upon entering college must leave behind everything in their past life—their hometown, family, friends, routines, hangouts, restaurants, and just about everything else involved in daily life. Transitioning to college is a very difficult phase. With no parents around, who is there to remind you to eat well (or cook the food for you), tell you when to go to bed, remind you of appointments, and do your laundry? How will you react to this new social environment in which you don’t know a single person and must start from scratch? How will you deal with challenging classes at one of the most prestigious universities in the United States? I feel like these are questions which right now I am beginning to uncover in my fourth week at UCLA. I have developed a social network, and familiarity with the campus and surrounding city that has made me feel comfortable in this new world. With this being said, the best way to describe me right now is: A developing, young college student-athlete who is a loving family member and boyfriend. As my description stated, I identify myself as more than just a new college student. I am a student-athlete. I play for the UCLA Baseball Team. I am a 1st baseman but can play most positions on the field. I believe baseball is a very important part of what I do because it is the biggest time commitment that I have. I spend on average five hours a day immersed in baseball activities that include practice, weight lifting, and conditioning. This takes tremendous dedication; therefore I believe this is a crucial fact about me. As I also said, I am part of a very close family. I am a son to two of the best parents in the world, and a brother and best friend to one of the most supportive siblings in the world. My girlfriend, Maya, plays an important role in my life as she is the light that guides me every day.One of the biggest forces that drives me in life is competitiveness. The majority of what I do is based off of my competitive nature and desire to improve in everything I partake. I am a college student so that I can become more educated, and one day know enough in my trade to support a comfortable lifestyle. I am a baseball player because I am passionate about the game, love improving my skills, and love the social scene that comes with the sport. Most of my close friends in college are baseball players, and people respect you more for playing a Division I sport as it is so competitive and timely commitment. I put my best foot forward every day because of my family. I represent them with every action, so I make sure to reflect positive outlooks so that my parents may be viewed as good parents, so my brother and I maintain a solid reputation, and so my girlfriend can be proud of me and my character. I’m me…Matt Giovinazzo.
