Because i am always ready for a challenge

Roshni PatelDis.1A/Friday 8amThere are three types of people in this world: 1) Those who make things happen, 2) Those who watch things happen, and 3) Those who say, "what happened?". We each as individuals decide who we want to be, but more often than not, most people due to society's high expectations and demands find themselves lost in the last two types. These very words marked the crux of the Nourish International Summer Institute that I had the opportunity to attend this past summer. The conference was a rigorous, yet rewarding which further sparked my interest in social entrepreneurship and sustainable development. Inspiring keynote guest speaker Nadine Naidoo, an Ashoka Fellow and founder of Visionaries in Africa highlighted empowering children in order to protect themselves from child pornography, which many countries in Africa are currently facing. Her documentaries captured the innocence of children and the crude realities of sexual abuse in which they face. It was a life changing presentation for me that stressed the importance of education for children which will enable them to not only think critically, become independent, successful, but one day have the ability to fight back on the harsh realities which they once faced. As a first generation in my family to finish college, I know how important attaining a good education is. Having heard the struggles that my parents and grandparents endured to enable me to have the opportunities in life that they were unable to have furthers my dedication to give back. My dedication for Nourish has sparked my passion to dream big and by teaching I hope to make my dream of lessening the education gap a reality. I absolutely love teaching and working with kids each chance that I get. The children need someone to challenge themselves and push them to their greatest potential because a little inspiration and guidance can go a long way. So if not now, then when…? I chose to be the person who wants to make things happen. I chose to not challenge only myself, but others as well.
