This morning in the elevator, I greeted a stranger because I wanted to make an imprint on his day. In my chemistry lecture, I asked a question in a class of four hundred because I was determined to be more than just a nameless face sitting in a crowd. Back at the dorms, I knocked on my neighbor’s door just to say, “hello.” And though I normally go about my day without a second thought as to why I do what I do, tonight I finally found the answer to that question. At night, my friends and I walked down to Westwood to get Diddy Riese ice cream. It was half past 10 on a weeknight and most of the shops were closed, but as we passed by a small cozy coffee shop with a bright neon light that read “OPEN,” the shining light caught my attention. I do what I do because I am Neon! This may sound confusing to most people, so let me explain the chemical properties of Neon. Neon gas is naturally a colorless inert noble gas. It is noble because it has what every atom wants, eight valence electrons. Yet, neon gas is inert and colorless, showing a sense of humility. Though neon is satisfied with everything it has, it gives off the most intense light in the form of neon plasma. But most importantly, neon has a burning desire to stand out and not just be another element from the periodic table. Neon reflects every aspect of my life. I live a blessed life where all my needs are not only met but also surpassed, and I find joy in every moment of my life. My closest connection to neon is the need to be more than just an ordinary girl. I do not want to just blend in with my surroundings. I want to be a shining light even when darkness consumes me. In short, I do what I do because I do not want to fade into the background.
