Because I want my own theme song

Every country plays its own national anthem before momentous events, every student walks to Vitamin C’s Graduation as they reach their graduation point, and every wedding couple strolls to Recessional as they make their way towards matrimony. As we know it, there seems to be a song for every point of our lives. A world where there is a tune for every expression of human emotion. But how does this music affect me?

Previously, I was searching for inspiration to write WDYDWYD in various ways: strumming my ukulele, singing the latest radio hit, or just lounging around to my favorite jams. Then it hit me. Music is a huge part of my life. There are so many components to the culture of music that it’s not physically possible for it to be defined in just one way.

The method of captivation for when a song has its hold on me is routine. And yet, I only have one requirement for the enjoyment of music: a singer with an amazing voice. All else is rather secondary, such as fast beats, low bass, and chorus harmonization. To become more familiar with a catchy tune, I find a lot of value in reading the lyrics being sung because each word adds to the music’s identity. Songs about love lust and love lost always gets me to the point where covering the song first-hand is an absolute necessity.

Making a cover of a song is a cheap way of making another song uniquely mine. While the song I cover is not originally created by me, the delivery of the performance is. Through direct speech, I can sing a song in an exclusive way that the original artist could not. Through musical instruments, I can add my own twist and riffs so that the style is more geared towards me.

One day before I pass, I’ll humbly construct a piece of music that everyone will share and love, a song that a person will always recount in at least one point of his or her life.

Because I want my own theme song.
