During high school I traveled on a mission trip to Costa Rica. I was able to work with a poverty stricken community and help begin rebuilding the community both physically and socially. This experience opened my eyes to an often-overlooked underprivileged community. This was a life-changing trip for me. By making a few personal sacrifices I was able to truly affect those in that community and change the lives of some needy individuals. Although I have not been able to work abroad in this type of service activity more recently, I have dedicated myself to making a difference in different local underprivileged communities. It is so important to step back and be thankful for everything that we have been given. I help those who feel like they have nowhere else to turn to. I want them to have the opportunity to achieve their goals and live life to the fullest. I want to give back to the community that has given so much to me. If we each took a few moments out of our week to help someone in need, then a real change would be possible. I volunteer to bring people together and strengthen the community. This is who I am. I am a leader in my community who wants to make an impact on the lives of others. I care about my civic duty to serve my community and I proactively strive to carry out that duty in any way I can. As a volunteer, you receive much more back in return for the time you put in. Volunteering is a growing experience in which you learn more about yourself and others in relation to our current society. I give back because I am thankful for the life I have been given. I give back because I can help someone in need and make a change for the better in my community.
