Because I'm still trying to figure the world out

Is failing to help people the same as hurting them? Is letting people die the same as killing them? Six million children die of hunger every year.  With all the money spent in America on frivolous items like designer handbags or luxury cars, I don’t understand how this number can be so high.

I do what I do because I’m still trying to figure the world out.  There are many things I simply don’t understand about our culture in America or other cultures abroad, and my ultimate goal from education is to gain a deeper understanding of how different people think and justify their decisions and actions. How can our country stay at war when there are so many problems here at home? How rich can people get before they are expected to make significant attempts to help others?

I want to understand how the world works so that eventually I can do something to change it.  How are issues such as same sex marriages, abortion rights, and drug laws talked about more than the fact that millions of children in the world starve? Many people in America work hard but remain in poverty, while many lazy people are able to find an excuse for government assistance to allow them to live comfortably.  Is there a solution for everything?

I want to change things in our society, but I have no idea where to start.   I am confident that getting a college education is a necessary first step towards whatever I choose to do with my life, and that’s what gives me peace in my life right now.  Nobody including myself will ever truly figure the world out, but trying to is what drives my life.
