I do what I do because not many will. It’s really difficult to point to one thing and say that’s what I do, especially in a life style where everyone is encouraged to do as many different things as possible to lead a ‘well rounded’ life. And I am no exception to that, sometimes wanting to be a follower sometimes wanting to go against the tide, but the one thing I can safely point as something I will always do is helping those in need. From Haiti to Katrina I’ve tried my best, if not to be there, at least to help in any way I can, and with the sheer amount of disasters and suffering in the world it has not been an easy or effective calling.
I admit I’m a privileged individual living in a modernized country getting a top education, even if I fail from here on out my fate will be better than 80% of the rest of the world’s. I think that recognizing how lucky I am just to be born in this type of privileged environment is one factor that motivates me to do what I do. But furthermore it’s seeing everyone else’ apathy that makes me realize how important what I do is. I’m a student group leader on campus focusing on aiding the deprived people of Central America and at first I expected recruitment to be a lot easier than it was. Why wouldn’t people want to go to a foreign country for a week and aid those in need? I assured myself, however, it does take a level of sacrifice that a lot of people aren’t willing to give up be it financially with the cost of such trips or time wise with the amount of training required.
I do what I do because the gratitude that comes from someone who has seen the absolute bottom of existence is more moving and more powerful than any other force in the world.
