I do what I do because there are limits to what I can do.
During my high school years, my favorite subject was science. However, upon entering college, I became more realistic as I could not imagine myself being in a lab with hazardous materials. On the other hand, history was a subject I had the least interest in; therefore, the fewer interactions with history, the better it is for me. Consequently, when the time came to apply for colleges, the major I chose for UCLA was International Development Studies (IDS). I was uncertain of what kind of major IDS was, but chose it because of the word “International.” Only now do I know that the IDS major is the equivalent of taking numerous history classes which I hate. It is possible for me to read the first sentence of a history book and begin to feel sleepy. But what other options do I have?
I have always wanted to travel around the world and naively thought that the IDS major would be what I want to study (once again, partly because of the word “International”). However, during my summer orientation, my Orientation Counselor told me that the IDS major was cancelled by the department. Surprisingly, this piece of news did not affect me at all because I had chosen this major by impulse. Thinking back on it now, it seems as if some higher power was allowing me to have another chance at choosing a major that I am interested in.
Therefore, in the end, I entered UCLA as an undeclared, but at the same time I was set on what major I would want to declare. This decision happened during the last day of the summer orientation; I learned that UCLA offers a Business Economics major. This was the closest major UCLA offered that was business-related. The Business Economics major was a competitive major because of the limit on business majors UCLA had to offer. It was shocking to me that UCLA did not offer majors such as Business Administration or Business Information Management. Now, I am making the best out of what UCLA offers by finishing up the pre-requisites before applying for the Business Economics major and the Accounting minor. As a result, I do what I do because this is the only thing I can do given the limitations. But now, what I can do is find ways around these limits and make the best of it for myself.
