It’s two o’clock in the afternoon and while society tells me that I should be at school getting good grades to finish up my senior year, I’m passing a joint to my band mate as we make the drive up to Los Angeles to headline our sold out show at the renown venue on Sunset Boulevard that will remain anonymous for legal purposes. As we arrive, security asks our age. I say twenty-two, and they believe it. Cool. After unloading our equipment and a quick sound check, we cruise backstage to our lounge to find a fridge full of beer and a steak dinner being put out by several beautiful women. Life is great.
I have never been one for the beaten path and that is precisely why I am where I am today. The idea of going to a nine to five six days a week in a suit and tie is something completely alien to me. I thrive in the art of music and the art of music thrives in me. The driving beat of rock n roll reflects my personal drive to change this artificial money-hog that we call pop culture into something that can be appreciated and respected on a worldwide platform. Music is a precious gift as well as a daunting responsibility. It is a commitment to share one’s creativity with the world and to understand the world’s reaction to it. I feel responsible to share what I have created and to put smiles on all of my heroes’ faces. Rock n’ roll deserves a comeback, and there is nothing that would make me happier than to bring it back myself.
It’s three thirty in the morning as my six best friends and I stumble down Sunset to our complementary hotel room a couple blocks down from the venue. Ears still ringing, I thank God that the Sunset Marquis is in walking distance because driving is not an option at this point.
Why do I do what I do? Two reasons. There are some things that books just cant teach. And because rock n’ roll is dead, and it’s my job to revive it.
