It was 1:25 a.m. Like always its the same routine taking the amtrak from my hometown all the way to Van Nuys Ca. except this time I sat in the back of the bus because there were no other seats that were empty. As I got close to the back of the bus, an African American lady all of a sudden stopped me. She stopped me because there was a man on the floor sleeping. I got to my seat just in front of where the African American lady was sitting. Another passenger also got on the bus. She sat just right in front of me. For about a quarter of the ride to Santa Barbara where I have to transfer to a train, the lady in front of me kept talking to someone on the phone loudly. At first it kinda annoyed me, but then it got me thinking about the people who rides the bus. Out of all the other people in the U.S. why do they have to take the bus like me? Most of them are around the age 40 to 60. I just thought to myself, maybe these people made wrong choices in their life and thats why they can not get a car to drive to their destination.
When I got to Van Nuys, I have to take the bus from Van Nuys to UCLA. As the metro bus go from one stop to the other. I realized that most of the people getting on the bus are in the age between 50s to 60s. Most are immigrants from Mexico. Then I asked myself again, why do these people take the bus? Is it because they made wrong decisions in their life and thats why they are on the lower class in our society? It came to me that maybe these people did not choose to take the bus and that they would rather prefer to ride a car towards their destination. This means that it is not their decisions that led them to the type of lifestyle they have now. It is the circumstances in life that lead them to that lifestyle. At that point, I realized how unfair this life can be and that the things I do now will shape my future. so why do I do what I do? I do what I do because I want to see a bright future for myself and my future family. I want to contribute to the change that people want to see.
