Writings are powerful sources that can connect the readers and the writers together through some common ideas. At the beginning, I started to read stories through the internet and books. In the stories, the writers describe in details how characters overcome their mental and physical obstacles, and at the end, they always overcome what difficulties came into their lives. Life is not always smooth going and reality usually will not go in the same direction as one wants it to be. Similarly, I face some hardship in life and sometimes and I begin to lose my way in the middle of the darkness. I often question myself what are the fields I am good at. Comparing to my friends, some found great strength in music, filming, art, math, chemistry, and physics, but I am still wondering around and do not find my strength in any field. Even though I am a material science engineering student, I still do not have the confident that the major is a perfect match. It is not because I do not like my major. Instead, the fact that when everyone has done his or her academic work perfectly is scaring me off. As a result, with a failure in a midterm, I feel lost and continuously question myself about my major. Moreover, when my grades are not as good as my parents expected, I feel guilty. So I stop in the middle of the crossroad and wonder where I am going with my life.
After reading some stories, such as story of Christopher Reeve who tried to overcome the fact of spine injury and the Helen Keller who learned to speak with the help from her teacher, I started to gain the confidence and courage from the books. And I actually have the idea –“Hey, if those who face such painful obstacles in their lives, can fight over their struggles, why can’t I overcome mine!” Understanding others’ obstacles or struggles becomes a way for me to step forward in my life with confidence, and I have the hope that I can overcome my difficulties. One fall cannot take me down!
Reading stories mentally feeds me with confidence. Despite how much knowledge I can learn from those stories, stories help me to grow stronger, so I can continuously my adventure in life with hope.
So one day, when I ask myself, “What have I done in my life?” the answer will not be “I am still deciding which road I should take!”
