Why do I do what I do? Everything that I’ve done thus far has been things that are expected of me and by complying to those expectations have been an acquired trait mainly to give back for all that I’ve taken in life. I live an average life, doing all the things that Americans my age does, and many would not know unless I tell them that English is not my first language. My family and I immigrated to the United States when I was a little shy of six years old. The main reason they moved was because of me and my brother, for our education later on in life. Because of that single fact, I feel that I need to live up to all that they want me to be: a great student, a good person, a good sister, and a caring human being. The things they want from me are not unreasonable but it is still very burdening. My parents came here for my betterment, leaving everything they knew behind to go to a place with foreign people and foreign languages, and because of them I have to try to be the best person in order to do my part. The Vietnamese idea of ultimate success involves having their sons or daughters becoming lawyers, business owner, or joining one of the medical professions. I don’t want them to regret their decision nor do I want to give them more hardships in life. Just as Atlas carries the burden of the world on his shoulders, I carry the hopes and dreams of my loving parents on mine. They are wonderful people who only want the best for me so the things they want from me are what I have to do. This is why I do what I do.
I think that's a very natural thing to do. I most likely would since, from my perspective, it seems like an ideal path in life but I would respect that there are other professions to explore.
