Even I feel I can become the next Bill Gates! Whenever people give me trust and a chance to go about doing something, I feel I have obtained the whole world making the impossible seem possible.
I might be a child from immigrant parents, but despite the financial hardship my family had, my parents always gave me the chance of education and a dream. Even when paying for food or rent was a burden, they would always provide me with what I needed even if it meant turning off the heater at night, or walking to work to save gas. However, when it came to the time of college, saving electricity or gas was not enough to help pay for my education. Due to the recent fee increases my family and I considered resting or giving up my education. But, my life changed when philanthropist Ed Hirsch offered me scholarship throughout my four years at UCLA allowing the unattainable dream to become reality.
Always having had a chance, I wondered, what about the homeless kids? I’m sure there were kids who dreamed of an education but couldn’t achieve it due to financial problems. I wanted to become a philanthropist who would stand up for these kids. The deprived life they lived with no choice seemed unfair. The kids who were in a position not out of choice but through birth seemed destined to live that life never having a chance to dream or strive. It was not because they lacked talent or desire; they were just never given a chance. They had to worry about their basic necessities therefore had to do repulsive work such as drug dealing. Did they have to do such work? They deserved better. At least one chance, one shot at life. Having experienced the importance of a chance, I wanted to give back not only as a future dentist, but also through building a homeless shelter for kids where they can have a chance to dream. I believe that without even having given one a chance, simply stating his or her abilities is not right.
