It was the last year of my high school. I still had no idea what I want to study in college. At that time, I was not even sure if I want to go to the college. I wanted to be a writer. I had full of ideas in my head. I just wanted to start my career as a writer rather than spending time studying something else. Of course, none of my family besides my grandfather agreed with it. I fought with my parents to the point we stopped talking for a month. During that time, my grandfather told me “If you really love to write, why don’t you write a novel now? Since there is still a half year to apply for college, write one and then decide.” I thought that is a great idea because I thought then I can proof my talent to everyone. Therefore, I started to write day after day. I spent three months to finish it. However, after finishing everything and comparing with my favorite author’s novel, I realized that my story is poorly organized, has too few vocabularies, and has no imaginations. My story is nothing but bad. Of course, I was really shocked about this and threw the work away without showing to anyone. However, my grandfather saw my work before I threw it away. He said to me “It was great. I felt it is like a rough diamond mineral. It is true that it is far from the perfect but after formation, it could be as shiny as the diamond.”
I realized what my grandfather was trying to do. He also wanted me to study like others but he wanted me to understand why. I cannot be a professional with only the passion. I need preparation, knowledge, and practice. Graduating from high school was just not enough for me to write a great novel. I need knowledge about everything because everything I learn helps me to pursue my goal. Therefore, now I am in college studying. This class is also important to me in the way it helps me to pursue my goal.
