My name is Theodore Joseph Landers but everyone just calls me Ted. Iam an 18 year old first year student-athlete (Football) at theUCLA. Although I play football and study at one of the most prestige’s schools in the nation these accolades are not what motivates and defines who I am. The value that represents who I am is that I am a Christian. I also believe that God has given me a distinct set of useful gifts that have helped people and me throughout my life.I am a leader. I love helping people as well. Listening is the biggest way I help people. Iearn their trust through helping them sort out their problems. Here is agreat example of why I do what I do! In my senior year of high schoolthere was a girl on campus that had absolutely zero friends. I was theonly one that would pass in the hall way and say hello or evensometimes put aside what people would think and the comments I would get and sit with her at lunch. One evening I was sitting in my room just about to go to sleep and this girl gave me a call. Let’s just say I was a little rattled! She said that she didn't want to live anymore and she hated life. I was shocked! Instead of telling a counselor or a teacher at school she called me and I embraced the opportunity. This time my leadership and listening skills had to jump from the minor leagues to the majors. I remember the feeling after I got her to calm down and you could here in her voice she had gained a little hope; it was the most satisfying feeling in the world. To know that you gave someone who was so depressed a hope for their future was the changing point. From that point I promised myself that no matter what I was going to give all I had to make a difference in people’s lives. I know my leadership and listening skills and everything that God has given me is for a reason. This is why I do what I do!
