Report from Cairo, Egypt - Feb 2, 2011

I love what I do... but this national crisis came and has made everything else in my life seem insignificant.

Things have been crazy over here (Cairo) as you know, we just got internet back today (yay:-) how we take some things for granted), the past week was very exciting and celebratory, then today everything turned ugly and very sad. We thought we were so close last night...we thought finally things would change. Yesterday there were over a million people peacefully protesting for the first time in Egypt.  Finally Egyptians weren't scared to say what they felt and we felt that we had momentum. Today a bunch of government thugs (we heard that they were paid thugs) charged on horses and camels (horses & camels in the middle of Cairo in 2011!!) into the peaceful protests and beating the protesters ! These were the pro-mobarak demonstrators who are claiming to try to keep stability. You watch Egyptian TV and it is as if you are on another planet. Headlines say that "Obama applauds Mobarak's steps" / "Pro Stability demonstrators clash with pro change demonstators" It makes your stomach turn, we're all in a state of shock, and we realize that this man would rather see Egytians kill each other than step down....So what started as something so exciting has unfortunately turned very sad :-( God knows what tomorrow will bring...

Anyway, sorry I can go on forever about this.... We are all very nervous now, don't know how it will unfold, but I guess time will tell.
