Satisfying Pursuit of Chemisty

The smell of solvents and reagents lasts clogs sinuses. I breathe in the aroma of the chemistry lab and when I leave the lab I reminisce the great times experienced by breathing in through my nose. A sudden memory plays in my head and reminds me how much I truly enjoy chemistry and why it is that I do it.

Ever since I could remember, I have had a yearning to understand matter. Middle school chemistry for me was the most existing class I could ever take. My professor would do a chemistry demonstration every week and it would always fascinate me how the concepts learned in the textbook matched what was done on the lab bench. My interest in chemistry grew even bigger when I reached the high school level of chemistry and was able to conduct several amazing experiments on my own that allowed me to thoroughly grasp the conceptual portion of the class. Having a lab to supplement concepts learned in class is what allowed me to gain a richer understanding of chemistry and also allowed me to enjoy chemistry.

I believe that college should be a time where you challenge yourself and test your maximum potential. There are several other challenging majors in college that I would have attempted but felt that my calling was in chemistry since I happen to really enjoy it and it is relatively difficult. The study of chemistry is not the easiest to handle and I believe the fact that chemistry is a challenging scientific discipline is what makes it more desirable to pursue. I enjoy the feeling of satisfaction after experiencing an immensely difficult course. One is able to leave that class with a feeling of extreme accomplishment and the vast amounts of knowledge. There are times when these challenging courses seem to be impossible to complete but knowing that there will be a great feeling of satisfaction upon completion of the course keeps me going and seeking more challenging courses in chemistry. My desire for chemistry would be nonexistent if the scientific discipline was too easy. I do what I do because doing something challenging yields high satisfaction and a feeling of great accomplishment.
