I do what I do because I want to be happy. I have acquired more of an understanding about why I do what I do since I have been in college. Looking back on my high school experience I realized that I did miss out on a lot. I did not go out with my friends very much, I never was really the typical high school student who was about having a great time; my focus was entirely around success in school and in my life. After coming to UCLA I decided to refocus what I do to enhance my self, and my personal goals. One of the greatest lessons I learned about myself since coming to UCLA is that I do what I do because I know myself the best, and I know what makes me happy. My entire life I have always wanted to, or thought I wanted to, be a doctor. I entered UCLA as a pre-med molecular biology student. Two years into my major, after taking six chemistry classes, 3 life science classes, and several physics classes I stopped on day to ask myself “why am I doing this?” First off the classes were painful for me. I hated going to them, I was so bored in them, and I wasn’t getting stellar grades in them. I finally realized that maybe being a doctor isn’t my calling. I wanted to explore more, and I wanted to find a subject that I truly enjoyed, and that I knew I would be happy and successful in. I started enrolling in economics classes and found that not only did I enjoy the material, and enjoy going to class, but I was excelling in them. This important lesson has really showed me that in all cases you need to ask yourself “Why am I doing this”. I have always been taught that if you don’t love what you are doing, then maybe you need to find a new path, a new passion.
