I am Nick Reyes and I am the last of four children. I work hard and I do my best to be a responsible and honorable person of character. I was always raised this way. I was also taught to make the most of every opportunity so I would never feel regret. I feel I must make the most out of my opportunity here at UCLA because most people do not get this chance. My parents grew up in the poorest of neighborhoods in the Philippines and worked extremely had to “make it” in the US. I feel I am already ahead as a UCLA student so I have the chance to become something even greater. I am very grateful and thankful for the road my parents have paved for me. Now I feel it is my job to make use of that road and take it to reach bigger and better things. I am not exactly sure what career I want to pursue yet, but I am considering medicine. My dad is a major motivation for me because he passed away over a year ago due to pancreatic cancer. I remember feeling hopeless because I felt like I could do nothing to help. But I also remember the family and friends that came to my family’s aid and supported us. This is the reason why I have a desire to help and reach out to others so I can give back and help those in need. Medicine is one way to do this. I need to perform my best from the start and continue on working to reach that point. This is something that would certainly be fulfilling because there are few things greater than seeing the smile of a thankful person that you had an influence on. Even if I do not follow through in the medical field, my motivation will drive me to light up the world in other ways. I am truly thankful and I wish to use the tools I have been given to be on top so I can give back to my community.
