To be Right

I feel that my actions are compelled by a desire to be right. In modern society, people seek the truth. Yet throughout history, multiple false ideas have been considered the same “truth” we seek in the world today. In the end, truth is merely an opinion society as a whole agrees upon. When everyone in the world believed the Earth was flat, that was the truth. It was a fact. So what does this have to do with why I do what I do? I've learned that truth is relative, all one needs is irrefutable evidence and support. If there is enough support and evidence, anything can become true. Any opinion can become correct.

This is why I argue. I argue to be correct. And oftentimes, even when one's position is wrong, one can argue their way to be being right. Take the modern court system for example. It is not perfect. Some innocent people end up in jail, some guilty people walk away. This is because the final decision is based on the opinions of the jury. The objective is not so much to be fair as it is to mold the jury's opinion. Eventually, if you can make their opinions coincide with yours, you will be “right”. This is the same mindset I take when I argue.

So now you may wonder what makes this unique of me. I sound like just any other self-centered, arrogant person who hates being wrong. But I would have to say I am different. I do not always argue for my personal gain. Sometimes I argue simply to show that “right” is a perspective, to cast the problem in a new light. I'll argue to show the exceptions of certain statements, I'll argue just to prove someone wrong. I'll argue to give someone a broader perspective. I like to show that something that seems undeniably true may not be true. Something that seems horrendously wrong may not be wrong. There are exceptions in the world, and just about every statement, every opinion, every thought can be right or wrong. It just has to be seen in the “right” perspective.
