What makes me happy is the ability to make other people happy. As a first year student in the nursing program, I am looking forward to putting on my scrubs and caring for a patient for the first time. One thing I would like to get out of this program is to have the ability to fully take care of the sick. To start off my path to becoming a nurse, I am currently taking introductory courses of nursing as well as a course of the human body. I believe it is my responsibility to bring care and happiness to people around me but especially to the sick. Every time I bring a smile to someone’s face, I have a feeling of satisfaction and accomplishment since I see myself as a big step in making a difference. After volunteering for a year in the Huntington Memorial Hospital, I realized that when people are sick in bed in the hospital, they tend to lack the positive attitude and environment necessary for a healthier recovery. Since smiling is contagious, I am determined to bring some more positive moods in this world by making people smile. Despite that recovery from an illness takes time and patience, having a positive attitude will definitely make the process go by faster and healthier. As a nurse, I will not only be able to bring joy to the sick, but also to make a difference in their care. It is a satisfactory feeling to see a patient recovering one day at a time and eventually to be on the way home. My determination for the future is to provide the best care possible to my patients and to bring happiness to their stays in the hospital. It is a wonderful feeling of satisfaction when I know I made a difference in brightening someone else’s day. In addition, I am learning to put myself in other people’s shoes to understand their situations and feelings. As a result, I am hoping to be able to dedicate my time as much as possible to helping others who are in need.
