To find the simple happiness hidden around me

The colorful sunset after a long day of class, a pile of crunchy leaves that you happened to step on, an unexpected encounter with a friend that you haven’t seen for a long time, finding the last piece of chocolate that you thought you already ate.

I always believe that the simple, small happiness bring the biggest joy into my life.

It may not be a big change or an impact in your life, it might be something that you won’t remember later. But the bit of happiness that it provides me in that moment is what brings a smile to my face and makes me feel that “life is good”. The best thing about the simple happy moments though, is that it is everywhere. We go through our everyday life not realizing that they surround us everywhere, all the time- in our room, in the kitchen, on campus, with our friends, from when you wake up to when you snuggle into your covers. Those moments though, go unnoticed because we take all those simple happiness for granted. Its existence becomes a given and underappreciated. The only way to re-discover the simple happiness is to take a different view upon the situation you’re placed in, take a step back, breathe, and find the happiness that you’re actually surrounded by.

I’m not saying that this is easy to do-I definitely forget to think with an open mind when I am faced with stressful situations, and can’t seem to get out of the self-destructive loop that makes it seem as though there’s nothing positive I can make of the situation. But the summer when I worked as a Peer Counselor was what left a big impact on me-I learned so much from my students, although it should’ve been the other way around. The motivation and passion they possessed while having such a big load on their shoulder, was just such an inspiration for me and reminded me that what I took for granted is a privilege for so many others. This experience left such a warm imprint on my heart, and not only steered me in the direction for counseling as a future career to keep learning from others, but to also be conscious of all the simple things that I take for granted in my everyday life and to notice the small things, that are actually the source for my greatest happiness.
