My parents came over here to America on a refugee boat without anything more than the clothes on their back. I think that if they can become the successful people that they are today then I have no excuse to slack off and waste the chance of living they never had. The reason behind my ideology is that my parents always told me to try my best in everything I do, not through strict discipline, but through example and hard work. With my mother not able to provide huge support and my dad basically supporting our whole financial situation, our low-income family has always faced hardships. To this day, they are struggling to pay my college tuition even though most of it is covered by financial aid. The cost of paying for my education and my safety includes my dad being a blue-collar worker staying in a cubicle all day trying to fix computer chips and my mom working as much as she can at minimum-wage although her physical condition limits her. There has not been a time where they have not tried their hardest for an item or experience I wanted such as a toy or learning the piano. Even though I did not get everything I wanted, the fact that they tried their best to obtain the money for it satisfied me. To my realization, they also have never had that toy or experience. This idea that they tried their best made me learn that to have what I want, I will have to work hard for it. One day, I know I will be able to give them the pleasures of everyday life they have sacrificed for my future and for my well-being. It is impossible to give them the 18 years of devotion they have given me, but I swear to try my best to give back the sacrifice that they have given me through making my parents proud by becoming a contributing member to society and to give them the best retirement they can ever imagine. The latter is more important for me to fulfill; however, the main goal of my parents’ sacrifice and effort is former.
Why do I do what I do?
To let my parents enjoy the beauties of the world that they never had the chance to see.
