To shine light on life’s shadows through medicine

When something obstructs light and prevents it from attaining its true intensity, a shadow is produced.  In life, these shadows can be seen as symbols of the effects of countless medical disorders that plague people’s lives and destroy their ability to live contentedly.  As a pre-med college student, I yearn to challenge myself in a demanding field of study, to repay society with my time and effort, and to contribute to a truly worthwhile cause by improving and saving the lives of others.  By both shining and brightening the light of medicine on the shadows that harm so many individuals, my life will achieve purpose.

As an Eagle Scout, I have placed great emphasis on community service and assisting others.  One of my primary sources of volunteer work is assisting at the local Wellness Community, which provides support, education, and hope to families affected by cancer.  During the time spent there, I have seen remarkable results: some patients have completely altered their outlook on life.  Witnessing the Wellness Community’s efforts to shine light on cancer’s shadow has greatly motivated me to pursue a medical career.  My mother, having won her own fight with breast cancer several years ago, continues to be a role model for countless individuals including myself.  Her personal struggle and her volunteer efforts have inspired me to generate my own light of hope and cheerfulness – now, by volunteering and studying, and in the future, by working in the medical field.

One quote from Ralph Waldo Emerson has shaped my personality, aspirations, and outlook on life: “To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived.  This is to have succeeded.”  Having grown up in a family dedicated to helping others, I quickly discovered that my passion lies in medicine, and that success is not measured by wealth, but by positive impact.  Hopefully, my impact will occur in the medical field, where I can lessen the effects of deadly diseases’ shadows and help people “breathe easier.”  This, I hope to achieve by casting light upon the shadow or by working to eliminate it altogether.
