Under the Influence Then Above the Influence

“Don’t strive to make your presence noticed, just make your absence felt!”

I used to be very materialistic and egocentric.  I simply thought that money could do anything and that being rich meant being successful.  I firmly believed that money would bring me happiness, respect, and success.  I wanted to impress the others by showing how smart I was and the many expensive things I owned.  However, I was too young and naïve to recognize the many other things life has to offer.  In the past few years, I began to realize that I knew very little about life and success.  Life isn’t just about how rich and successful I am.  It is also about what I do and how and why I do it.

In the process of changing my standards of success and defining what life is really about, I have met so many great people who have guided me in my life.  In college, I’ve had plenty of opportunities to meet a broad range of people from different backgrounds.  Through my conversations with them, I’ve learned about new experiences that I have never encountered myself.  Through their lives, I have seen the world from different perspectives.  They became my mentors and sources of inspiration.  Each person in my life has offered me at least one valuable lesson. Every individual has his or her own story and an experience that is unique and priceless.  Not only have their stories inspired me to make the most of myself, but they have also influenced me to stay humble.

Because I owe so much to these people, I want to be a positive influence and inspiration to someone else in the same manner my mentors were to me.  What I can do in return for what I owe to them is to become a role model that inspires future generations.  Why I do what I do now is because of my greater will to be a positive influence to society by becoming an exemplary person.  Not only do I want to be remembered for what I accomplish, but I also want to be recognized for my morals and true self.  I want my absence to be felt.  To become the person I want to be, I strive to be the best person I can be today.
