WdydwydI do what I do because of a mixture of “I have to” ’s and “I want to” ’s. Since I was a young child, my parents attempted to give me a strong ambitious nature. Both my parents were the product of east-coast middle class families struggling to transcend a life of mediocrity and poverty. But where they lacked financially, they were rich in family. Born into large families with strong relationships between even the most distant of cousins, they were given a gift. To me it is a gift many people will never feel, or for that matter, one they will never even know they lacked. And my parents were pushed by their parents to attain the one thing they did lack: money. In the scheme of things, my parents did well. As they are both chemical engineers, they attained a much more comfortable financial position than the one they had as kids. And I grew up out of this history. I was born with an affinity for the sciences and mathematics and as I grew up I realized many things came easy for me. I never felt the pressure of deciding what I should major in or where I want to be a few years down the line. I guess in that sense, I was lucky. Most people spend years figuring out who they are and what they stand for and I seem to have already figured it out. So here I am, a sophomore engineering student going to classes, trying to get involved, and thinking about how to get to where I want to be. I do what I do because I want to accomplish something and I want to be the best at what I do. I do what I do because I feel like I know what I need to do to get to where I want to be. Yet, what I’ve come to realize is that the greatest achievement is in possessing good personal and family relationships. And trying to find those is what I really do.
