Nine years ago, my father was diagnosed with late stage cancer in one of his tonsils. The doctor said this was typical for heavy smokers or heavy drinkers. However, he has never smoked nor does he drink at all. I remember hearing the news before one of my little league baseball games. I was only twelve years old and didn’t understand the situation all that much. After speaking with my parents, I realized how serious the situation really was. Thankfully, my father fought his cancer and was able to overcome it. His battle had a major impact on my life and how I live it.Although he was able to survive, I have a new outlook on life. I now believe that family is the most important thing to me in life. When we did the seven values thing in class, this was one of the three values that I kept. While I am at school, I keep in contact with my family continuously. I even drive home every other week just to see them. I make sure to spend time with them because if something worse was to happen, then I wouldn’t have that opportunity. I have learned that life is short and you should spend it with the people you love.While my older brother was a senior in high school, he was attacked at a party and was almost killed. He was in the intensive care unit for three days and I visited him every day. I have always looked up to him, but until then I had never shown him. After this happened, I made sure to spend more time with him and to let him know the impact that he has had on my life. He loves snakes so we go hiking in the hills near our house looking for them. We have found a lot of different kinds of snakes including some rattle snakes. Although I am afraid of them, I go there just to spend time with my brother. As you can see, family is the most important thing to me.
