I am Jocelyn Ramirez, a small town girl looking for adventure and new opportunities in a big city that is located hundreds of miles away from home. I am also a lover of classic rock and nature and every summer I am a farm-worker, but most of all I am a dreamer. From late September to early June I attend UCLA. I go to class every day, do my homework every night, attend club meeting every week and I go out and have fun on the weekends. During holiday vacations and three day weekends I spend a lot of money on plane tickets so that I can fly home and spend time with my family. During the summer I pick cherries in Oregon and sort peaches in northern California. I don’t have to do this kind of hard labor but I do it anyway.I leave my family for Los Angeles because I know that I must go to college to receive an education and learn how to be on my own in order to make my dreams and goals a reality. However, being far from home is not easy. My heart breaks every time I leave my family and the small town in which I grew up. Working in the fields every summer helps keep my dreams and goals alive. The hard labor fuels my thought process and both my heart and mind are filled with an extreme passion in helping other young Latino farm-workers get out of the fields and into universities. Although, I did come all this way to receive a prestigious education, I still go home often. I do this because I love my family. When I’m around them my life feels complete and that makes me happy. I constantly want to surround myself with people I love because I know that anything in life is worth nothing if it means that you are not happy and not being true to your self and feelings. I do the things I do because I do not want an empty life.
