WDYDWYD?I’ve been sitting in this lounge thinking about this question for a while now and the only answer I can give myself is that, “I do what I do because its just what I do. If I do what I don’t do then I would be bad at what I do!” Therefore, the best answer I can give at this point is that I do what I do because it’s simply all I know. In other words, I can’t do anything that I don’t know, and what I know is every thing, every person, every event, that has had any kind of impact on me.Carl Jung once said that, "The meeting of two personalities is like the contact of two chemical substances. If there is any reaction, both are transformed," and I think this is an important factor in why we do what we do. Everything single thing an individual experiences in his or her life has an effect on that person. Thus effecting how this person acts and thinks, as in, what this person does. Therefore, how can anyone do anything that doesn’t result from a past experience that essentially opens the door to this thing that they “do,” they simply do what they know.I’ve been playing music, more specifically percussion, for practically my entire life. My dad plays music for a living, so since I was born, I’ve been surrounded by music and everything that comes with it. During kindergarten, my teacher recognized me as the son of a well known musician, and in lower and middle school, I took pride in the fact that my music teachers called me one of their best students on my report cards. After middle school, I decided to pursue music more seriously when I was accepted into a highly competitive art school in San Francisco. And now, I attend UCLA, a place where high school students would kill for the 4.3 GPA and the 2300 SAT score essentially required for students to even have a chance of being accepted. But I, with only a decent GPA and bad SAT scores, did not fall under this category of elite students. I got in because I was recognized as having a passion and a talent for music. So obviously music is one of the most important aspects of my life and I though it may seem like I’m being big headed or bragging, just the opposite is true. I clutch onto to music as if it’s the only thing I have, because it’s true. And for this reason I am very humbled, for if you took this away from me, I don’t know what I would be left with. So why do I do what I do? Because it’s practically the only thing I’ve done for my entire life, I don’t know how to do anything else. When I look at, my answer to this question seems pretty sad, maybe even depressing. But actually, I don’t think it is. I do what I do because the things and I people I encounter and experience every day, every minute, and every second of my life dictate what I do. And I have no problem with this, because I have no power over where my path takes me and what it presents in front of me. One of my close friends has a motto that says, “Living better through chemistry,” and I think it just might be my motto as well.
