Who I Am

Asraf, AdamArt and Architecture 10: Discussion 1BOctober 16, 2009Who I AmMy name is Adam Abraham Asraf. I am a second year pre-history major at UCLA looking to get a degree with good grades and then maybe apply to law school. I always get good grades, I was the valedictorian of my senior class from Long Beach Wilson High School and I have always worked hard in school. When I graduate I intend on becoming a teacher or a lawyer. This is who I am and this is what I do. I can think of hundred reasons for attending a university and doing well in the classroom: to get a good job when I graduate, to make more money, to become a worldly, more sophisticated, better educated person. However, these are not the main reasons for why I do what I do. I do what I do, because my father, a brilliant, kind, loving, morally virtuous man, immigrated to this country from a distant land and never got the chance to get an education. I do what I do for my mother who has put countless hours and all of her energy into raising me right and I want to make her proud. I do what I do to set a good example for my younger brother Simon, to teach him the moral virtues of hard work, responsibility, dedication and self-reliance. Most importantly, though, I do what I do, for me. I do what I do to create a purpose for myself in life, to be a productive, active member of my community and to make a positive difference in the world. Thus, with my family behind me, my moral compass pointing north, with confidence and a positive attitude, I will go out into the world and do what I do to the best of my ability by becoming the best student I can possibly be and eventually becoming an active member in my community as a lawyer or a teacher. For my family. For my community. For myself. My name is Adam Asraf and I’m a student at UCLA. This is who I am. This is why I do what I do!
