Who I am. What I do. Why I do it.

Why do you do what you do?I am Jun Cheng, and I am a Mathematics of Computation major at UCLA. I was born in Guangzhou, a province located at the southeastern part of mainland China, near Hong Kong. My parents and I immigrated to the United States while I was still an infant, with high hopes that America, the Land of Opportunity, will provide their newborn child with promising prospects. As a Chinese American, I learned that my cultural heritage demands that I always respect and obey my elders, especially my parents. Ever since I could talk, my parents had a vision of success and wealth in my future; they made sure that I would do whatever it takes in order to make that vision come true. I was told that the only way to achieve their envisioned success was to do extremely well in school and graduate from a renowned college. So I listened to them, devoted my time to do my best in school, and diligently prepared myself for college in order to meet their high expectations. When I was accepted into UCLA, I had completed the first step toward their vision. I chose mathematics as my major, not exactly because I am obsessed with solving math equations, but because even after the all career exploration tests and classes I have taken, I still had no solid clue of what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. When it came time to choose a major on the college applications, I was in trouble, but I did remember from my careers class to consider my personal preference as well as my strengths in a particular subject. Although I did show some interest toward computer science, I had no previous experience with the subject; also my parents were strongly against a purely computer-based major. In the end, I chose to major in Mathematics of Computation, which encompasses my strongest subject in high school, math, and my interest in computing. Since it is a much broader subject than computer science, I am not restricted to doing only computer-based jobs. So far, I am really glad that I had listened to Mom and Dad. Their sacrifice, their guidance, and their unconditional love for me are the things that make me who I am today. My name is Jun; I study mathematics at UCLA; and I do it because I want my parents’ vision of success, which is now also my dream, to come true.
