Why Do I Do What I Do.

Who am I? I am a Chinese American student at UCLA, I am a happy person, I am very optimistic, I am… I can come up with a long list of items to tell you about me, but frankly, I am still exploring just exactly who I am as well. If I had to give you an answer, I suppose I am a young individual searching for my identity.Whether it is poetry, story or just some random thoughts I had throughout the day; whether it is in Chinese or in English; whether it is a piece I worked on carefully for academic purposes or a quick write that’s filled with grammar and spelling errors--- recording down my ideas, experiences, and emotions with words is something I do and enjoy doing. For me, writing is not just a mere exhibition of ideas and thoughts with words, but rather it is a cathartic process, a form of artistic expression, and most importantly, a method of intracommunication.Writing has become a way for me to deal with my emotions and express myself for the past few years---there are times when I feel people listen to me but have trouble hearing me, so I write down what I have to say, and it makes me feel relieved and tranquil inside. Writing is a wonderful way of showing and telling---whether it is a love letter, a poem or lyrics to a song, there is something beautiful about using words to depict what’s real and meaningful to us. Writing helps me to dissect, understand, and improve myself--- it is through the diaries I wrote years ago that I caught a glimpse of my own growth and maturation process. The process of writing allows me to be genuine and introspective, and it helps me to understand who I really am, little by little, day by day.
