Flagellum: “a leather whip [consisting] of three separate thongs, each ending in a set of two lead balls. These roughly shaped balls added weight to the beating, but also would tear the flesh of the victim.”*Have you ever been beaten with a flagellum? I am pretty sure your answer is “No”. Well, I know someone who was beaten with this deadly weapon (39 times to be exact) and that is the reason why I do what I do. Approximately 2,000 years ago, Jesus was beaten with a flagellum, then forced to carry a ridiculously heavy Roman cross and was hung on that same cross, where He suffocated on His lungs. According to the Bible (which has been proven accurate due to archeological, scientific and historical evidence), Jesus did not die because He deserved it…but because of me. He came to take the punishment that I deserved because of the wrong things I have done (aka sinning).After truly understanding that someone suffered the most horrible death known to man just to save my life, I decided to devote it to God and turn away from doing things that are against His will. That is what I do: I live according to the standards of the bible and not popular culture. In today’s culture, it seems absurd that I, a college student, do not go to the occasional Saturday night party or even listen to popular artists such as Lil Wayne or Alicia Keys. A lot of people say that I am being a fanatic but I believe it is because they have never seen people take a religion, especially Christianity, so seriously.As long as I live, I am going to continue to live by the Bible and by God. I do not care if I get mocked or am not in the “in crowd” or whatever other obstacles I might face. I am a Christian first before ANYTHING else, because I believe and understand the sacrifice made for me and I want others to see it too.
